February 1953

Saturday 19th
Malcolm called round about 11 o’clock and listened to Pat's new records.
I met him again after lunch in the High Street, and we went to the Rivoli.  The film was “The Iron Mistress” featuring Alan Ladd and Virginia Mayo.  It was quite an enjoyable show.

Afterwards went back to Denton Avenue and had tea.  Left about 8 o’clock after listening to a large selection of Malcolm’s record collection.

Sunday 20th
Visited Grandmother at Hornchurch with father.  Molly and Cousin Susan were also there.
After lunch called at Rainham.  Unfortunately we found only Christine in, who at first didn’t recognise us.  She had been suffering from flu – the reason for her absence from school.  Indeed she looked extremely swollen about the eyes.
After staying only a few minutes we went onto Averly to see Jean.  Their home is extremely pleasant and the district quite nice.  Lynn and Christopher looked very well.  Roy of course was at work.

Monday 23rd
Went up to London (Golden square) with Malcolm for his interview with the Granada Circuit at 10.30.
I then accompanied Malcolm to Granada, East Ham for further interview.
After a good lunch at East Ham we went to Hampton Court for the afternoon.  The Royal Apartments were most interesting.  The gardens naturally however were most dull – what can one expect for February.
We had tea on the strand, following which – the film “My Cousin Rachel” at the Odeon, Tottenham Court Road.
Home at midnight – A most enjoyable day

Tuesday 24th
Visited Chloe in the evening and had supper.  (Delicious lemon meringue pie).
Unfortunately she was unable to procure Vera’s gramophone.
Home at twelve!

Wednesday 25th
Went to Romford Market with Nan, and then on to Rainham.
George had just been elected secretary for the third year, of the telephone Engineers Union Branch.
Winnie seemed quite well.  Christine can now play the piano, and is a member of the school choir.  Her drawing is excellent!

Thursday 26th
Darted round to Eastwood in time to catch Malcolm leaving for the Mascot.  Presented him with “The Robe” for his birthday on Monday.
Met Pat at 7.10 at Southend Victoria and had supper with her.

Friday 27th
Travelled up to Brixton after lunch and arrived a little before tea.  After tea with Guy and gIlbert there was a small cocktail party in the evening.  The guests arrived about 7.30
-          Mr Gilbilaro (Sicilian Composer e.g. “Carnettieri” sung by Gigli – DA 1912)
-          Mrs Gilbilaro (Sir John Banbirollis Sister) and their son Lawrence
-          Mr John Antcliffe and Mrs Antcliffe (who succeeded Gracie Fields in “Mr Tower of London”).

Saturday 28th
Saw Wilfred Pickles in “Gay Day” at the Streatham Hill Theatre with Guy during the afternoon.
In the evening we heard Gilbert at the Repent Palace.
